One for the books: Penken Battle 2020
05.02.2020

Bluebird, close to 90 contestants overall and of course highly skilled riders on a truly fine setup: That was the Penken Battle 2020 in Mayrhofen. Please read on for more details about this sweet day and the results.

On February 1, the QParks Tour dropped by at Penken Park in Mayrhofen to host this year’s Penken Battle. Along with the QParks Tour came 89 stoked riders, fantastic weather and #goodvibesonly that motivated the snowboarders and freeskiers to particularly massive runs. Another crucial part for the riders’ performance was contributed by the rad contest setup consisting of 6 kickers on 3 hits and an end section with a tube and a rail. You want Penken, you get Penken. Due to the high number of contestants, the slopestyle contest was held in the mode “2 runs – best one counts”. Every rider had two runs which were judged and the best one entered the competition.

Best Freeskier David Wolf

David Wolf, one of the “Tiroler Skiverband – Riders” won the Penken Battle with his run consisting of a Switch Left Cork 7 on the first kicker, a Switch Right Bio 9 Mute on the second one, a Left Flat 9 Bow & Arrow on the third kicker and a Switch Lip 450 Off on the rail. On the second spot came the winner of the first QParks Tour Stop, Filip Rabanser from South Tyrol. His Italian team colleague Maximilian Pupp came in third

In the women category, Silje Kinkead from Australia won in front of Muriel Mohr from Germany and Emma Spiss from Austria. The young Australian convinced the judges with a Left 360 on the first, another Left 360 on the second, a Safety on the third kicker and a Skislide in the end section. The podium of the groms category matched the podium of the open women category.

The best snowboarder of the day came from Belgium and is called Joewen Frijns. He showed a run consisting of a Frontside 7 Inverted on the first kicker, a Backside 9 on the second and a Cab 7 on the third kicker before topping this bowl of steeze off with a Switch Bluntside 720 on the Rail. This run got him the win in front of his “Shredmasters” team colleague Fynn Koenen from Germany and “Why Ain’t You” rider Benedikt Fridbjörnsson from Iceland.

Hollie Smith from Great Britain won the Snowboard Women category in front of her countrywoman Molly Phillips and Austrian Kiara Zung. “It was back in the 90s. We were fanatic snowboarders, constantly roaming the surrounding hills, building kickers wherever possible. Bad Religion and NOFX were blasting from our battery-powered cassette player. With our camcorder, shovels and boozy tea we had everything we needed and it was a damn awesome time.”
